Protecting Concrete Countertops
Concrete Countertops Maintenenace
It is very important to follow a program to protect the countertop surface. Most of the time the concrete contractor will leave instruction for the customer to follow. The maintenance and care of your concrete countertop will vary depending on the sealer that was put on ad what the contractor recommends you follow.
Here are a few tips on how to maintain and protect your concrete countertop.
- Penetrating Sealers: Concrete countertops sealed with penetrating sealers do remain porous and subject to stains and acid attacks. Penetrating sealers preserve the natural look of concrete but only offer partial protection to stains and acid attack from lemon juice, vinegar etc. To further protect your concrete countertop we recommend using a topical wax such as carnauba wax over the penetrating sealer and clean spills as soon as possible.
- Film Forming Sealers: These sealers offer much better protection against stain than penetrating sealers but they do not preserve the natural look of the concrete and usually have a medium to high gloss. The main issue with film forming sealers is scratching of the surface. A topical wax like carnauba wax may offer better protection against scratching and marring of the surface.
- Other Precautions:
- Do not cut directly over the countertop especially if a film forming sealer was used, always use cutting boards.
- Avoid placing hot pots or pans right over the countertop as it may cause some discoloration.
- Do not use abrasive or caustic cleaners or soap. Use mild detergents, non ammonia or neutral cleaners.
- Always follow the instructions left by the installer.
