Unknown dangers of some products we use every day.
After seeing and commenting about the dangers of breathing in concrete dust on here in the concrete overlay section; I have felt burdened to share some personal knowledge about something very few people in our industry know.
Solvents and specifically solvent based acrylic sealers and dyes. DEADLY! Everyone thinks about the explosion and because they have not been blown up it must be OK. Yes. There is a great danger with that but not the reason for my post.
Being involved in product formulation and developement I have become very experienced in the hazards and health risks with certain solvents our industry uses and want to write specifically about BENZENE.
Benzene is one of the most carcinogenic solvents in use today.
Benzene is in xylene and acetone. Both of these solvents are used in acrylic sealers and dyes. Also liquid nail. Studies have been done in recent years that attribute an explosion in leukemia and melanoma to benzene. Can't tell you how many times I have ran a bead of liquid nail and smoothed it with a licked finger.
Now that you know how dangerous this solvent is here are some precautions you can take..
The first is switch to water based products. Forget being green. Be safe.
Never use these solvents inside.
Your eyes breathe as well as your lungs so wear sealed goggles.
Wear a respirator. and here is something you need to know about respirators that will blow your mind...
once you open a respirator out of its sealed packaging and install the carbon filters, they last about 8 hours. WHAT? Are you kidding? Shouldn't we all know about this? Wearing a respirator in the hot summer sucks and now I find out it was not working.
When you are finished with the respirator, you need to seal it in a ziplock bag. As long as air is able to pass through the carbon filters, they are being used; and again only last about 8 hours.
I am sorry for the bad news. I just feel so many people are uneducated about the dangers involved with our industry. Please, be careful. Use precautions I wrote about in here. You can be sucessful and safe at the same time.
I hope you find this information helpful.
