Does anyone use 50 or 100# resin diamonds to prep an existing coating to be recoated? The existing coating is in good shape, just a new tenant moving in and they want a color change to a spec product..

I think it may have the same effect as a sanding screen if done wet...

Any thoughts?

What type of

What type of material/coating/system do you need to prep prior to color change.  Depending on what it is, a 40 grit sanding screen may do the job.

It is existing epoxy being

It is existing epoxy being prepped for new epoxy.

The plan was to run screens or possibly a 100# diamabrush, but I would rather run grinders, because I can get in there and get it done quicker (3- 30" machines)

I'm just wondering if anyone has used something on a large grinder to prep epoxy rather than remover it? Or any experience with the diamabrush?

So long as the concrete on

So long as the concrete on the surface is general good condition and well bonded to the substrate you can whatever means you want to do so ...the point is to make sure that the remaining epoxy you will be applying the new epoxy over is free of foreign matter/contaminates and break the glaze/profile.  If you use some type of large grinding equipment you will of course be getting it down to the concrete itself (which may or may not be necessary, this is a judgement call based on inspection of it, overall condition, and bonding of the exising epoxy)... if you opt for a swing machine with 40 grit, this will do the job as well most of the time).  I know those that swear by the "diamabrush" for use on certain types of surfaces, depending on what the outcome needs to be to proceed with material to be applied over it.

Resins

Q. Does anyone use 50 or 100# resin diamonds to prep an existing coating to be recoated?

A. Resins will most likely float on top of the epoxy, not performing as you wished.

Prep

I have used 80 grit diamonds on epoxy for recoating with good results. The key is going over a well bonded coating, you don"t want to grind into the concrete or generate so much heat that the original coating is compromised. If all goes well you can prep a lot of floor in a short period of time compared to several floor maintainers.

If the epoxy your coating

If the epoxy your coating over is not failing anywhere you absolutely can just sand it with a 80grit sandpaper. Other things to do is maybe run 150grit metal diamond over to skim the top and re coat after that.
