Any ideas on resurfacing a pool deck here in California. Old ugly concrete with a few cracks that the owner wants it to look like new concrete.

Thanks for any ideas.

Old concrete with a few

Old concrete with a few cracks in the quake and tremer State have the potential (and probably will at some in point in time) transfer back up through cementious types of overlayments; however, if you were to apply a seamless rubberized surface, having over 500% elongation it would flex/stretch with the cracks (just as it does joints in plywood, control joints and cold joints of concrete, etc).

For well over 20 years I have been applying a self-leveling, textured liquid rubber surface that has fine rubber granules incorporated in it (address safety concerns, in relating to guarding against slip/fall injuries due to the natural characeristics of rubber to grab onto bare feet, shoe soles, and animal paws (meets and exceeds ADA & OSHA guidelines in relation to COF's on wet and dry surfaces). Think about it ... if you have a rubber mat in your tub, no matter how much water, soap, and shampoo are running across it you don't slip ...if you have a rubber mat in your sink and drop a glass the rubber absorbs the shock and the glass doesn't break ...if you have your rubber soled tennis shoes on you feel safe ... this textured rubber surface is like having a seamless tennis shoe sole applied seamlessly over the entire surface. Kids will run on pool decks, no matter how many times you tell them not to (a rubberized surface will prevent them from slipping whether the surface is wet or dry.

I have applied it on waterpark swimming pools surfaces, municipal interactive water spray parks, hot tub and spa areas, shower/locker rooms ... as well as above grade decks over plywood, in the night houses of zoo animals (elephants, rhinos, giraffes), over concrete common areas in horse stables, doggie day care floors, in restaurant kitchens and food processing areas (as stated it above, it meets the sanitary surfacing criteria of USDA, FDA, and Underwriters Lab

Will not biodegrade in full UV rays of the sun.  Was originally formulated for the duel purpose of the seamless surfacing of wood ski decks (serving as a waterproof surface to keep water out of lodge rooms below as well as having the strength and integrity to hold up to public ski boot traffic. Thousands of feet of this seamless rubberized surface is also applied on balconies and landings (motels, apartments, condos, etc), as well as surfaces that are subjected to vehicle traffic.

Can ge applied in solid textured colors; or, add decorative medias (blends of different colors of fine rubber particles, colorquartz, even flakes to give it more pizzaz).

It requires no special tools or equipment to apply (just a 1/4" serrated squeegee to apply the self-leveling liquid rubber base, broadcast in the textrured rubber as you go, when cured there is a special/flexible alipahtic urethane that is applied over it.  Note: all the materials are solvent free and approved for use in California.

If you are interested in this flexible, seamless, rubberized system for overlaying the cracked concrete pool deck give me a call.  I'll be glad to share my application experience, knowledge, and all the literature I have (specifications, brochures, and documents I have written that cover all the unique features and benefits associated with it (I'll even send you a made up sample).

Safety surfacing, as well as those that are waterproof, are frequently "required, not merely desired" (and there isn't a great deal of compeition, prostituting it and driving the profits/price per sq.ft. down down) ...the rebounding opportunity and ease in application associated with this type of surfacing is something that you may want to consider adding to your current line of surfaces/services.

Pool Deck

Ok i got a look at this today. Existing conditions are; an under lying fiberglass reinforced rubberized coating with a textured acrylic/cementitious based looking, hopper gun applied textured topping. This is in the Hollywood Hills where there is definitely some areas of major movement going on. There are a couple of cracks and delamination spots but 90% is very sound. Color has completely faded. This guy has redone this twice in ten years, and he knows with the movement he has this will be an ongoing thing for him. He likes the look of the knocked down texture.

The system you discribe Lindy sound like some traffic coatings i've done in the past.

I'm not confident i can do this one with the fiberglass repair and texture he wants.

Maybe i can team up with some one who has done this???

It can take traffic

It can take traffic (vehicle); however, it can also be applied in various solid or multi-colored decorative manner that will stretch and move with the unstable stressed substrate.

I can give you the name and contact infomation of a guy/contractor that I have known for 20+ years out there in California that specializes in this type of surfacing; he has done a lot of applicatoin training as well as willing to spitting the profits on jobs with other contractors that needed a helping hand (guidance) on their initial applicaion.  We have formed strong mutual degree of respected bond over the years, as well as become friends who have alway assisted and supported each other.

A conserative estimate would be Kevin having done a couple of thousand jobs over the past 20 years, having the varifiable references to support the longevity/performance of them in "quake country" as well as adjoining west coast states.  Several of his applications have been at Disney, the San Deigo zoo, Anaheim stadium and other tourist/ public use areas. I'm sure that he would be willing to lend you a hand if needed ... he's one of those guys that you meet, then after a short period of time you'll feel as if you have a true ally in the field.

According to me stone finish

According to me stone finish is a very convenient option due to its durability. The stone finish pool deck resurfacing is done by embedding large stones, finely cut into a layer of concrete. This type of pool deck resurfacing, is probably the best type of finish, as it not only looks good, but has many advantages over the other methods of pool deck resurfacing. The stone finish type of decks are highly effective due to the durability that they offer. Another very good advantage of these types of surfaces, is that they provide a very good natural friction. This natural friction proves to be very useful.
