Acid Staining over Microtops
Microtops are very thin concrete overlays that are mostly use to create a new canvas for acid stain over damaged or badly discolored concrete. Many times concrete cannot be acid stained, it may be too rough if not finished properly, it may have holes and divots left from removing carpet tack strips or removing tile, there may be deep stains left by carpet or linoleum glues and so on. Microtops offer a great solution for all those issues, no matter how bad the concrete is, as long as it is sound and may be properly cleaned and prepared, a microtop can be installed right over it.
Microtops may also be used on concrete that is not in bad shape, when the design calls for something very intricate, bright and colorful, Microtops are the only way to go. Most concrete is medium to dark gray in color and no matter how much the installer plays with the stain it is impossible to lighten up the concrete. Acid stains do not have pigments so when only impart color from a reaction with the existing concrete, if the concrete is dark it darkens more, if it is light in color the result will be lighter and brighter.
Another thing to ponder is that acid stains hare somewhat unpredictable and every concrete will react different, but if a microtop is used, the contractor can predict with certainty what color is going to result. Many contractors will apply a microtop whether is needed or not just so the color always comes out the way they want it.
